Welcome

We should study the dynamic martial art of karate as an effective fighting art designed to end conflict quickly and effectively. This makes it an ideal self defence method for children and adults as well as a method of physical and mental fitness training.

Karate is far more than a fitness regime or martial sport. My method of training incorporates practical applications for every aspect of karate including Kata, basics and combinations as well as the more traditional training seen in most karate clubs. In our karate training we should question everything and constantly strive to improve our technical knowledge and martial capabilities through diligent training and study.

Kancho Kanazawa's Visit.

In April Kancho Hirokazu Kanazawa and his son Nobuaki Kanazawa visited Ireland for a serious of seminars and grading examinations in Dublin, Cork city Bandon and Clonmel. Our kyu grades and black belts were busy preparing for this very important visit and a number of nervous souls stepped onto the floor to take long awaited grading examinations.

Master Kanazawa is Chief Instructor of the Shotokan Karate International Federation based in Tokyo Japan and he is no stranger to our shores. He has visited Clonmel every year for the past two decades and we have enjoyed countless seminars with the Master of the Shotokan style ("Kancho") who prefers to be addressed simply as "Sensei" or teacher.

Congratulations are due to the following club members who graded with Kancho……

Josephine Thomas  6th Kyu Green Belt

Kevin Condon         4th Kyu Purple Belt

Isaac Hogan          4th Kyu Purple Belt

Shane Phillips         1st Kyu Brown Belt

Aisling Fiuza           1st Kyu Brown Belt

Nine Trophies at Piltown Tournament

On Sunday 22nd February 2009 our members travelled to Piltown for the club's Annual Invitational Tournament. An unusually small but very competitive Clonmel contingent did us proud on the day collecting nine trophies. A special thank you is extended to all those who participated and supported us in our battles. For those who went home empty handed be proud that you did your best and it takes courage to step onto that competition mat.

A Long Day
As is usual with these events it is a very long and difficult day for competitors, judges, referees, kids, adults, parents and supporters alike but everybody teamed together to ensure a very enjoyable and succesful event. A special thanks should go to the members of Piltown Karate Club for organising a very well run competition.

Kata
This years competition saw the biggest team kata entry of no less than seventeen teams contesting for the coveted first prize. Nevertheless two Clonmel members Kaysey English and Shane Fraughen combined forces with one member from Midleton to blow away all opposition and took the prize. Way to go Kaysey and Fraughney? Black belts Kaysey and Shane combined forces to Lee Conroy to take 1st 2nd and 3rd place in the Junior Kata.

Kumite
In the fiercely contested boys sixteen to seventeen years fighting for Brown and Black Belts Shane Fraughen and Lee Conroy took second and third place while Kaysey took first place in the Girls event. Our last competitor of the day Jamie Conroy battled his way to second place in the boys cadets brown and black belts section. Jamie, Kaysey Lee and Shane together with their Sensei John Aylward are all training very hard in preparation for the World Championships in July in Athens and hopes are high for success.

New Members?

Now is an excellent time for prospective new members to visit us and try out a training session. All our students and black belts both young and not so young train together for warm ups and basic training beginning at 6.30pm. As the class progresses the class will be divided in order to practice various techniques specific to the student’s ability and experience. We cater for all ages from six to “sixty” and beyond. Karate is a martial art suitable for all ages and all students are encouraged to train to the best of their ability. We are not an elitist group where only the most skilled and determined may apply. We are for everybody who wants to train. Be warned though! Karate is an art form which takes time to perfect and master! In this modern era it is an invaluable self defence system and exercise programme. Beginners may join our classes at 6.30pm on both nights. Beginners train for an hour each night while the more advanced grades train for two hours.

Five for World Championships

Five members of Shotokan Karate Clonmel have been selected for the Irish National Karate Squad to compete in the World Karate Championships!
Athens. The S.K.I.F. Ireland team consisting of 17 juniors, 12 seniors and 9 veteran masters will be travelling in July to the home of the Olympics in Athens Greece to compete in the 10th Shotokan Karate International Federation World Championships. The Clonmel group consists of 3 juniors, Lee Conroy, Kaysey English and Shane Fraughen, 1 cadet Jamie Conroy and a club instructor John Aylward. All are delighted with their recent success. The four younger students are the clubs most out standing competitors and have put in many hours of training working hard to accomplish their goals. Over the past 12 months they have all been working very hard to prepare for this tournament and are proud to represent their country in the international arena.
